Reverend Jones and Phaeton

Until tomorrow, at least, the world will be watching every move and listening to every word of Reverend Terry Jones. Here is his picture?

Of course unless you have been trapped with the Chilean coal miners you are aware of Rev Jones and the his church. Many are critiquing the Reverend Jones for his recent statements indicating that he will burn Quran(s) for the reason that he believes:

The president of Dove World Outreach since 2001, Jones entered the ministry in 1979 while working as a hotel manager in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, according to his deposition. In the 1980s, he said, he and his family moved to Germany, where he led the Christian Church of Cologne. Members of the congregation eventually split with Jones, according to Der Spiegel.

It was while Jones lived overseas, he said in the deposition, that he learned about “the violence that is connected with Islam.”

In his YouTube videos, Jones asserts that “there is no such thing” as moderate Islam, that Islamic law calls for violence, hates Israel and Christians, and that Islamic immigration to the U.S. should be barred.

“They are only coming to this country to take over, to try to enforce, through population growth, through political means, through educational means, to enforce and force their laws, their Islamic laws upon, us,” he says. “In Europe, they have already done it.”

Often when you see interviews of Reverend Jones he has an Imam standing close by, the Imam Muhammad Musri.

“It seems that the whole world was there, which I think is part of the problem,” Musri said in an interview.

Their discussion took place in a church office decorated with a poster from the Mel Gibson movie “Braveheart” and an American flag. Musri said the pastor didn’t appear happy to see him at first.

“He asked me if I was armed and planned to hurt him and I said no, I come in peace,” Musri said. “He is not a charismatic or sophisticated man, but he is very loud.”

Jones, who told him he had never read the Koran, listened as the imam told him the Sept. 11 terrorists weren’t inspired by the Islamic writings, Musri said.
“We were able to break some ice and get some genuine conversation on his concerns,” Musri said. “I asked him, what would Jesus do in your position today? Would he love his neighbor? If we are your enemies, you are supposed to love your enemies. I think that resonated a bit.”

The Christian Science Monitor revealed that eleven countries have requested that something be done to stop the Reverend Jones from buring the Qurans. The horrible examples of religious tolerance such as Pakistan, Malaysia, India, Indonesia, all of which have had millions of Muslim deaths due to religious conflicts. Reverend Jones has killed no one; he has challenged Islam as a set of heretical beliefs. Is this not the same that Benedict XVI did when he quoted the

Sharky&Sharky looked for the comparison in mythology and is reminded of Phaeton. Phaeton was the son of the god Apollo, Helios the sun itself, and the nymph Clymene. He was a beautiful baby and he developed in to a handsome young lad. However, he boasted to his friends of this high parentage just once to often. They challenged Phaeton which pushed him to ask his mother for proof of his godly parent. Clymene said go ask your father. So off Phaeton went to ask Apollo. Skipping some of the myth like how does Phaeton get in the presence of the Sun? How does Apollo keep from burning his son up when they make light conversation eg. how is your mother, does she still have a place for me, maybe I will drop by some time? Apollo says: Well Boy what do you want? "ask what you will that I may satisfy your heart’s desire" (Sharky&Sharky: Bad mistake coming). "Phaeton declared his wish--his father’s chariot for one day with licence to control the soaring steeds and drive the Sun across its daily journey" Apollo says in god talk "No way Jose; Zeus the father of us all cannot drive the Sun Chariot; only I have the skill". Of course Phaeton being a normal teenage ass says. "But you promised, You promised". Apollo says, "Yes I did, and so be it. Now the bars are let down, and the boundless plain of the universe lies before Phaeton and Apollo's fire breathing horses. The outcome of Phaeton sun ride is absolute disaster. He set the world on fire. Earth called out to Zeus for deliverance. Zeus destroyed the chariot and its driver with a lighting bolt.

The comparision between Phaeton and Reverend Jones is apparent. Reverend Jones has challenged moral absolutism Islam but he is not prepared to drive his argument points to success. He has confronted Islam totally unprepared to withstand the withering criticism from his President, a commanding general, and worlwide non-thinking press. In not having his own program locked in, he was like a "ship without a ballast" and he is being tossed hither and thither. Next time Reverend Jones consider being a voice like that of Isaiah and however better prepare yourself. The answer does not lie in burning Qurans. The answer lies in justice, peace, harmony and open expression against Jihad, Sharia, and Sexism.

However Sharky&Sharky wants to congratulate Reverend Jones on one point important point. He is the first western person in recent memory that has taken a public offensive against Islamic moral absolutism. He did it poorly but he did it. He has taken the battle to the Islamic moral absolutist and shown that they can be defeated when openly confronted. Basically he is helping to crack the shell of moral absolutism which is dependent on ignorance. The only response of Islam was the usual riots in the street, effigy, and flag burning. The moral absolutism of Islam must undergo reformation. Its three components, Jihad, Sharia, and Sexism must undergo dissolution. Rather than critizing Reverend Jones other religious should be joining him and fighting moral absolutism. Let us all see how he does on his visit to NYC to meet with the MGZ principles
