It takes a special person to choose education as a profession. The hours are long, subject matter can be difficult as well as bland, respect from students hard to earn and a host of other issues. But occasionally a very special teacher - one who gives their all - separates themselves from their colleagues.
Such was the case when students of the Karolinska Institute performed their first clinical autopsy. Yes, the corpse that lay before them was none other than their professor.
Autopsies tend to be very intense in and of themselves. "I was super shocked" said one of the students involved in the procedure when he saw the body on the bench. NO KIDDING! Said another, "The first autopsy is very emotional and we autopsied someone we knew."
Professor Birgitta Sundelin, the chief physician who was responsible for the course at the time, regrets the incident. Probably not as much as the professor being autopsied.
